The Full Story

Carrying on the Legacy

My name is Brenda and I've been sewing for a long time (let's say long ago when people used a phone book to look up a number). My grandmother had a sewing machine that had one of those pedals that you moved up and down to make the machine sew !!! I use to sit at her feet and she'd tell me when to start and stop moving the pedal, that's when I was introduced to sewing. She'd make aprons and beautiful quilts that would probably cost both arms, 1 leg and a kidney to purchase today. We'd talk about what she was sewing at the time or about her vegetable garden, I was just a kid and didn't really have any problems or concerns back then other than should I put pink ribbons or yellow ribbons in my hair that day.

As I came into my teenage and early adult life, my problems and concerns changed my mother and I would use sewing together as our time to bond, laugh and share. I learned a lot from her during those times, wisdom I'll never forget. Although I had other siblings, sewing was something only she and I did together....Looking back on those years I treasure and reflect upon with appreciation and loving memories. Unfortunately, some years ago she passed from metastatic colon cancer, which left a hole in my heart, nothing can replace her ....”but” I have the opportunity to carry that legacy on with my daughter(Mecka). We started sewing together much later in her life than I did with my mother, so we have a lot of time to make up for. She loves the arts, drawing, painting; but to appease me, she'd sew a garment or two with me. She soon began to combine her love for the arts with her love for our sewing time together. We now use sewing as “our” time to bond, laugh and share, just as I use to do with my mother. Hopefully she'll be able to look back on these times and treasure and reflect upon them with appreciation and loving memories as I do of my mom.

One day, we just decided to make a project of sewing a sling bag and a bucket hat, but not just any ordinary bag and hat, we used our imagination and creativity to design something just a touch different. We started wearing the items and the response was unexpected.....”people liked them and wanted to know where we got them from”.....the business was born. But what should we call this business, it has to mean something......

Sewing is something that has played a part of most of my life time from one generation to the next. Even my grandchildren (teenager and young adult) play a role in the business (no they don't sew, but as with most young folks....they have an opinion about everything). So we get their input on some of the designs, fabric choices and or embellishments. Looks like we have a business that has four “generations” involved. This is our first family business that was started by Mecka and Brenda....The name “Generations by MB) – (Mecka/Brenda) was born.

When you purchase a item from Generations by MB, it's not just fabric sewn together.... it's a item created with bonding, laughing, sharing and love sewn into the fibers. We are stitching generations together!
